Jolie visits displaced kids in Haiti

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has extended her summer goodwill mission by flying to Haiti to visit children who were left homeless after a devastating earthquake in January.

The Tomb Raider star travelled to a children’s village in Santo, where nearly 500 children have been housed after the tremor, reports contactmusic.com. Jolie, who has been a UN goodwill ambassador since 2001, brought toys for the kids and even spent the night with them.

“The reason why I like to visit and support such villages in the world is because I have seen that the children are growing up in a safe and loving environment,” said Jolie.

Jolie’s trip to Haiti came just hours after she wrapped up a humanitarian stop on the Ecuadorian border with Colombia, where she met with villagers who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflicts in the South American region.

Angelina Jolie makes low-profile visit to Haiti

Actress Angelina Jolie has quietly returned to Haiti for meetings with Haitian and U.N. officials.

The weekend visit by the “goodwill ambassador” for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was not announced to keep it low-profile.

U.N. officials confirmed the visit when asked by The Associated Press. They agreed to discuss the trip only if not quoted by name because they were asked not to share details of Jolie’s visit.

Jolie has visited Haiti several times. In February she met with orphans and other earthquake victims.

The actress has also visited Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and other countries on behalf of the U.N. refugee agency.

Angelina Jolie: ‘Now is not the time’ for Haitian adoptions

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour talked to Angelina Jolie while the star and UN goodwill ambassador was in Haiti this week and Amanpour asked if Jolie is she’s considering adopting more children.

“I’m always open to children around the world. We’re that kind of a family; Brad and I talk about that,” Angelina said. “But that’s not what we’re focusing on at this time, by any means,” she continued. “We’re not here for that. We’re here to see how we can help protect the children in the country and scale up the needs here.”

Angelina also said adopting should not be anyone’s focus when it comes to the children of Haiti right now. “For somebody who is an adoptive parent, I understand the urge to assist in that way,” she said in the CNN interview airing Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. “Now is not the time, an emergency is not the time for new adoptions in any way.”

Angelina Jolie is making things especially hard on the haters now that she’s in Haiti… especially since Haitians are cheering for her simply because she cares. Representing the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Angelina visited an SOS Villages camp this week after meeting with U.N. officials in Port-au-Prince.

Sure, Angelina might be carrying out her duties as a goodwill ambassador, but the effect she had on Haitians was undeniable. They were even heard chanting “Angie! Angie!” when she visited the orphans in the SOS camp. PopEater reports:

“Jolie also toured a Doctors Without Borders hospital in a Port-au-Prince suburb, waving to onlookers. She and partner Brad Pitt have contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for its emergency medical operations in Haiti.”

Angelina Jolie spent the better part of her Tuesday at the MSF Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where she visited with a 10-year-old Haitian boy who lost his left leg during the Jan. 12 earthquake. Earlier, the U.N. goodwill ambassador spent time with survivors at the Dario Contrera Hospital in Santo Domingo, where she was accompanied by Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, a representative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and the son of Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. In the aftermath of the devastating quake, Jolie and partner Brad Pitt aided the relief effort by donating $1 million to Doctors Without Borders to provide medical assistance to those in need of emergency care.

Angelina Jolie visits Haiti with UN refugee body

Angelina Jolie began two days of meetings with Haiti earthquake victims Tuesday in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency.

The actress, representing the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, met with U.N. officials in Port-au-Prince and visited an SOS Villages camp for orphans outside the capital, where she was cheered by Haitians yelling, “Angie! Angie!”

That same camp took care of 33 Haitian children after a U.S.-based Baptist group was arrested at the Dominican border trying to take the kids out of the country. It wasn’t known if Jolie spoke with any of the children, and journalists were kept at a distance throughout her visit.

The American missionaries have been accused of trying to take the children out of Haiti without proper documentation. The group says it was heading to a Dominican orphanage following Haiti’s quake and had only good intentions.

Jolie also toured a Doctors Without Borders hospital in a Port-au-Prince suburb, waving to onlookers. She and husband Brad Pitt have contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for its emergency medical operations in Haiti.

Jolie was meeting with Haitians employed in quake debris cleanup through a joint U.N.-U.S. Agency for International Development program before spending the night at a Brazilian military camp outside the city.

On Wednesday, Jolie planned to visit the southern city of Jacmel, a camp for people made homeless by the quake, as well as a Save the Children relief supply center before returning to Port-au-Prince and leaving for the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Jolie has previously visited Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and other countries with UNHCR.

Brangelina urge fans to help Haiti victims

Washington In the wake of Haiti earthquake, celebrities have come forward urging fans to donate for the victims.

Stars including Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are all doing their best to garner support. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have promised to work closely with Haiti born Wyclef Jean for those left homeless in the tragedy.

Jolie‘s fellow Goodwill ambassador Alyssa Milano asked for followers to on her Twitter page to donate to the Red Cross. Oprah Winfrey too requested viewers of her talk show to donate to the Red Cross. An earthquake measuring 7.0 wrecked Haiti earlier this week.
